TITLE: MPLA Representative

VISION:  

MISSION STATEMENT: The primary purpose of a Representative or liaison is to promote activities and concerns of interest to both library organizations to the benefit of MLA Board and membership. The term of services is for three years. The MPLA Representative should be able to convey MPLA regional activities and trends of interest to MLA Board and membership. The Rep will convey MLA activities and concerns to MPLA Board and membership.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES: 

Goal: The MPLA Rep will represent MLA concerns, activities, and interests at MPLA Board meetings. 

Objective: The MPLA Rep will attend MPLA Board meetings as an association representative. MLA will provide reimbursement

Goal: The MPLA Rep will represent MPLA concerns, activities, and interests at MLA Board meetings. 

Objective: The MPLA Rep will attend MLA Board meetings as an association representative.

Goal: The MPLA Rep will communicate with MLA membership and MPLA membership using a variety of methods. 

Objective: The MPLA Rep will utilize Wired-MT. 
Objective: The MPLA Rep will utilize Focus and the MPLA Newsletter. 
Objective: The MPLA Rep will utilize MPLA-ex and MPLA-l. 
Objective: The MPLA Rep will correspond with membership via letter, phone or email.

Goal: The MPLA Rep will represent MPLA at Conference. 

Objective: The MPLA Rep will setup and man the MPLA booth at MLA Conference. 
Objective: The MPLA Rep will provide a report at the MLA membership meeting at Conference.

Goal: The MPLA Rep will work with MPLA Board members to identify potential award nominees, committee members, and Board members from Montana. 

Objective: The MPLA Rep will alert MLA members to professional service opportunities as MPLA officers or committee members.

Goal: The MPLA Rep will share membership information between MPLA and MLA Boards. 

Objective: The MPLA Rep will share membership information with the Boards as directed to support and improve membership activity in MLA.

TIMELINE:  

Summer 

Attend MLA Board Meeting 

Fall 

Attend MPLA Board meeting, Denver (usually September) 
Attend MLA Board meeting, Bozeman or Helena (usually October or November) 
In certain years there may be an MPLA Board meeting in the fall at an MPLA Conference. 

Winter 

Attend MLA Board meeting, Helena (usually January or February) 
Attend MPLA Board meeting, Denver (usually December or January) 

Spring 

Attend MLA Board meeting at Conference (April) 
Attend MPLA Board meeting, Denver (April) or 
Attend MPLA Board meeting at spring conference site (selected years)

JOB DESCRIPTION:  

The MPLA Representative will communicate with MPLA Board and membership the activities, goals and missions of MLA. The MPLA Rep will communicate with the MLA Board and membership the activities, goals and mission of MPLA. The Rep should be able to travel to MLA and MPLA Board meetings. The Rep will communicate using a variety of methods to reach the membership of each organization.

COMMITTEE ROSTER: N/A

BUDGET:  The MPLA Rep should submit a budget to the MLA Board in late spring or early summer. The budget should cover travel to the MPLA Board meetings as noted in the MLA Handbook. If your library can't cover photocopying or mailing of materials, these expenses should be included as well.

HISTORY: 

PROBLEM AREAS:  The MLA Bylaws need to be changed to reflect the following or perhaps the following should be considered:

  1. Term of service is for three years. 
  2. From Handbook, B. Travelling expenses are to be paid by MLA. MPLA will not pay for state rep expenses. 
  3. B. MPLA Rep should attend as many as possible MLA Board meetings and MPLA meetings (or a specific number of meetings?). 
  4. Can an MLA member represent MLA with a proxy vote if the official MPLA Rep cannot attend an MPLA Board meeting? 
  5. What does MLA get from this position? 
  6. How can MLA direct the MPLA Rep to report to the Board MLA's needs? 
  7. What does "active" member mean (MPLA Representative paragraph 1)?
