OFFLINE 2013 Information

The Montana Library Association is proud to offer the Offline Technology Conference in Butte Montana this year. The event is planned for the first and second of February 2013 in the Thornton Building in uptown Butte. The Thornton Building is home to Siafu Corporation,LLC which manages Montana's super-computing center in conjunction with private industries. The conference will feature Marshall Breeding as its keynote speaker and presentations on some of the following topics:

  1. Digital Rights Management especially as it pertains to technical report (pre-publication) and academic publications.

  2. Gadgets... reading and computer; iPads and their copy cats

  3. Any type of" train the trainer" program that would give library staff tech-related programs to present to patrons. (TPZ, internet, catalog, database, e-mail, Word Processing, etc.)

  4. Open source tools (circulation)

  5. Configuration and maintenance of multiple public workstations including cloning options ie: acronis, norton ghost, vs. imaging with external hard drives, etc. and recommended software like deepfreeze, etc.

  6. Thin client - new tech

  7. New Trends - what are highly tech-savvy libraries doing? Is the CD format going away soon?

  8. How will libraries get streaming video of popular movies to patrons? Cloud computing and privacy issues.

The conference starts on Friday at noon with lunch, sessions and an afternoon break. The day will end with a catered meet and greet happy hour (wine and beer). Dinner will include dining coupons for a wide variety of Butte's fine dining establishments. Saturday will begin at 8 o'clock with a breakfast bar, followed by sessions until 1pm. A boxed lunch will be provided so that those who need to travel can, and those who want to stay, can eat and visit. Registration will open in November, so mark your calendars!
